Data Sharing & Preservation

The IA2 (Italian Astronomical Archives) Data Centre, in addition to management of the main INAF archives from ground-based telescopes, also provides the INAF community with Data Sharing and Long-Term Preservation services.

  • Data Sharing: Collaborative Cloud storage available for all INAF employees and associates.

  • Long-Term Preservation: Storage space dedicated to users or projects. In both cases, the activation of a dedicated personal account is required. It is possible to obtain storage resources through the biannual "INAF USC VIII - Call for Computing and archiving resources". It will also be possible to request "on-demand" storage resources providing an exhaustive Data Management Plan.

Any request (space increase, account activation or simple info) should be sent to: Questo indirizzo email è protetto dagli spambots. È necessario abilitare JavaScript per vederlo.t

Info:
The IA2 infrastructure currently have (for all projetcs)
1.5 PB of disk space on 3 separate stacks
2.5 PB of tape space (expandable to 8PB)

Please remember that:

  • Storage: it is a place where data is simply placed to allow their subsequent use. The organization is given by the user who owns it, and where possible sharing with other users is possible
  • Archive: it is the place where the data, in addition to being located, are also organized through the OAIS standard, and therefore searchable through dedicated interfaces.

It should also be noted that when we talk about Storage we are essentially talking about:
  • Fast storage: Reduced space and directly connected to the computing system
  • "Middle term" storage: Storage on high-capacity rotary HDs with reduced I / O speeds
  • "Long term" storage: Storage in the Tape Library whose access is asynchronous
